로뎀나무 아래 누워 자더니 천사가 어루만지며 이르되 일어나서 먹으라 하는지라“ (열왕기상 19장 5절)로뎀교회의 성서적 배경은 열왕기상 18장과 19장에서 비롯됩니다.
엘리야는 그 당시의 왕인 아합과 왕비 이세벨이 섬기던 바알신과 아세라신들의 선지자들을 갈멜산에서 진멸하고 승리합니다.
이로 인하여 왕비 이세벨은 엘리야를 죽이기로 결심하고 엘리야를 찾습니다.
생명의 위험을 느낀 엘리야는 40여km의 먼 길을 걸어 광야에 이르게 되고 광야 길에 이른 그는 너무 지치고 피곤하여 하나님께 죽기를 간구합니다.
이런 엘리야에게 햇볕이 쬐이는 광야에서 쉴 수 있는 그늘이 되어준 나무가 로뎀나무입니다.
로뎀나무는 광야에서 자라는 나무로서 4m 정도의 크지 않은 나무입니다. 그러나 광야의 강렬한 햇볕과 강풍으로부터 보호막이 되어주는 나무입니다. 또한 척박한 광야에서도 흰색과 연보라색의 아름다운 꽃을 피우는 나무입니다. 엘리야는 로뎀나무 아래서 휴식과 안식을 취할 뿐 아니라 하나님의 함께하심과 현존하심을 깨닫고 사명인으로 다시 태어납니다. 엘리야는 로뎀나무 아래서 새 힘을 얻어 그의 사명을 다시 자각하고 사십주, 사십야를 걸어 하나님의 산 호렙에 이르게 됩니다.
