"کمال الدین علی محتشم کاشانی " در 905 هجری قمری در کاشان زاده شد. آموزش او در همان شهر آغاز شد و او علوم زمان را فرا گرفت. پدرش بزاز بود. در جوانی کار پدر را ادامه داد، ولی چندی نگذشت که نظرش تغییر کرد و به شاعری پرداخت و نامش بلند شد و به دربار دومین شاه صفوی راه پیدا کرد و ستایشگر او شد.شاهان صفوی مروج تشیع بودند، از این رو شاعران دربارشان به مدح اهل بیت می پرداختند. محتشم نیز به مرثیه سرایی روی آورد و نامدارترین مرثیه سرای ایران شد.مرثیه ی" باز این چه شورش است که در خلق عالم است" کار اوست. او با وحشی بافقی شاعر هم عصر خود ارتباط و مکاتبه داشت.
محتشم عمری طولانی داشت و بیش تر آن را در کاشان گذراند و در نهایت در سال 996 هجری در همان شهر درگذشت و در همان شهر جسمش به خاک سپرده شد.
مزار محتشم در محله ی محتشم زیارتگاه است و جایزه ای به نام او هر ساله داده می شود.
