『スター・ウォーズ/フォースの覚醒』は、アメリカのSF映像作品『スター・ウォーズ』シリーズの、主要実写映画第7作です。ウォルト・ディズニー・カンパニーによるルーカスフィルム買収後初の『スター・ウォーズ』映画です。
2012年10月に米娯楽大手のウォルト・ディズニー・カンパニーが、人気映画シリーズ「スター・ウォーズ」で知られるジョージ・ルーカス監督が設立した映画会社「ルーカスフィルム」を40億5000万ドル（約3200億円）で買収すると発表しました。ディズニーはスター・ウォーズに関する権利も同時に取得し、2015年に最新作『エピソード7』を公開することを明らかにしました。
監督はアクション、ドラマ、サイエンス・フィクションといったジャンルの作品でよく知られ、スター・ウォーズ・シリーズのファンであるJ・J・エイブラムス で、自らがプロデューサーも務めます。
共同でプロデューサーを務めるのはエイブラムスの長年の相方ブライアン・バークと、ルーカスフィルム社長のキャスリーン・ケネディ。
脚本は、『エピソード5/帝国の逆襲』『エピソード6/ジェダイの帰還』の共同脚本家ローレンス・カスダン。
もともとはオスカー脚本家のマイケル・アーント が脚本も書く予定で4、50ページのあらましを書いたが、2013年11月にエイブラムスとローレンス・カスダンに引き継がれた。
その後、ルーク・スカイウォーカー、レイア・オーガナ、ハン・ソロが物語の中心になると報じられ、2014年1月下旬にはエイブラムスが脚本の完成を報告している。
シリーズの生みの親ジョージ・ルーカスは新シリーズのクリエイティブ顧問を担当する。
原語の副題『The Force Awakens』は2014年11月6日（現地時間）STAR WARS公式Twitterアカウントなどで正式に公表された。邦題『フォースの覚醒』は2015年1月1日0時（日本時間）に発表。なお、現時点では、これまでのシリーズのようなタイトルに『エピソード7』が付けられていない。
