경주 성동시장의 역사는 염매시장으로 시작하여, 1971년도에 현 위치에 이전하였고, 초기 600여평과 합동식당부 400여평으로 구성이 되어 운영하다가, 지금은 3000여평에 556개 점포로 발전되었습니다.성동시장은 오랜 전통에 맞게 과거 학생으로 시장을 찾으신 분들이 현재는 자녀들가 함께 옛 추억을 잊지 않고 찾아오는 분들도 많습니다. 또한 경주에서는 규모가 가장 큰 도매시장으로 명성을 이어오고 있습니다.

특히 식당부는 언론보도가 많이 된 곳으로 일명 먹자골목과 합동식당으로 부르며 떡볶이, 순대, 한식뷔페를 맞볼 수 있는 곳으로 전국적으로 관광객들이 지속적으로 찾아오는 성동시장의 명소가 되었습니다. 특히 성동시장의 순대집은 모두 자체공장을 가지고 있어 신선하고 특색있는 맛을 자랑하며, 전국에서 유일한 우엉 김밥은 시장의 대표적인 먹거리로 성장하였습니다.
변화하는 유통구조에 적응하기 위해 2011년 상인대학을 개설하여 138명이 졸업을 하였으며 이는 전국 최다 졸업생을 배출한 기록을 남겼습니다. 또한 IT 교육, 맟춤형 외국어 교육 등 지속적인 상인 역량 강화를 위한 교육을 진행함으로써 시장 활성화에 노력하고 있습니다.
또한 전통시장 살리기 일환인 온누리 상품권을 시장 내 모든 점포에서 취급을 하고 있으며 2011년부터 상인회에서 온누리 상품권을 100% 환전해 주는 등 고객분들이 전통시장을 이용하는데 불편함이 없도록 노력하고 있습니다.
