符，又稱符契，或符節。是古代朝廷調動軍隊或發布命令的信物。通常用竹板或金屬製成，上面刻著文字，剖分為兩半：一半留在朝廷，一半由將帥持有。它是權力的象徵，具有絕對服從的意義。漢代君權神授思想認為天會賜祥瑞予人君，以為受命的憑證，這種憑證叫做符命。道符，又叫神符或天符。符所具有的這些內容和形式特點在漢代時期被巫師、方士和道士借用到鬼神世界創作形成。在對符的體式的認識上，道符除了借用如前所述的現實社會中朝廷作為信物的符契、符節、符命、符傳等文體外，還使用“策”作為對“符”的稱呼。
