主要描寫孫悟空、豬八戒、沙和尚三人保護唐僧西行取經，唐僧從投胎到取經受了九九八十一難，一路降妖伏魔，九九歸一，終於到達西天見到如來佛祖，最終五聖成真。自《西遊記》問世以來在民間廣為流傳，被尊為中國古典四大名著之一。吳承恩（一五零一年至一五八二年），字汝忠，號射陽山人，淮安府山陽縣（今江蘇省淮安市淮安區）人，中國明代傑出的小說家，自幼敏慧，博覽群書，尤喜愛神話故事。在科舉中屢遭挫折，嘉靖中補貢生。嘉靖四十五年（一五六六年）任浙江長興縣丞。由於宦途困頓，晚年絕意仕進，閉門著述。吳承恩一生創作豐富，但是由於家貧，又沒有子女，作品多散失。
