絵本や、学校の教科書にも掲載されているくらい有名な「ごんぎつね」ならびに「手袋を買いに」 ですが、両者が書かれた時期はまったく異なっています。
「ごんぎつね」が、南吉が18歳の頃に書かれた物語であるのに対し、「手袋を買いに」は、南吉が亡くなる寸前に書かれ、亡くなった後に発表されたものです。(1943年没・享年29歳)
どちらも、狐を主人公にした、人間というものの本質を問いかける、願いとも祈りとも取れる寓話であるにもかかわらず、この物語の結末はあまりにも違います。そしてその両極をもって、人間というものの有り様をまざまざと描き切っています。
これほどまでに短く、かつ平易な文体であるにもかかわらず、ここまでの深みを描いた作品は、他に類をみないと言ってもいいと思います。
幼児から大人まで、国や世代にかかわらず、老若男女に問いかけるこの物語は、この現代においても数多くのことを語りかけてきます。
