《閱微草堂筆記》原名《閱微筆記》，是紀昀晚年於乾隆五十四年（1789年）至嘉慶三年（1798年）間以筆記形式所編寫成的文言短篇志怪小說。主要搜輯各種狐鬼神仙、因果報應、勸善懲惡等當時代前後的流傳的鄉野怪譚，或親身所聽聞的奇情軼事；在地域上，其涵蓋的範圍則遍及全中國，遠至烏魯木齊、伊寧、滇黔等地。全集分五書，共二十四卷，約四十萬字。
書一《灤陽消夏錄》六卷，作於乾隆五十四年（1789年）。
書二《如是我聞》四卷，作於乾隆五十六年（1791年）。
書三《槐西雜志》四卷，作於乾隆五十七年（1792年）。
書四《姑妄聽之》四卷，作於乾隆五十八年（1793年）。
書五《灤陽續錄》六卷，作於嘉慶三年（1798年）。
