O SICO (Sistema de Informação dos Certificados de Óbito) é um sistema de informação cuja finalidade é permitir uma articulação das entidades envolvidas no processo de certificação dos óbitos, com vista a promover uma adequada utilização dos recursos, a melhoria da qualidade e do rigor da informação, e a rapidez de acesso aos dados em condições de segurança e no respeito pela privacidade dos cidadãos.Foi através deste sistema que, desde 15 de novembro de 2012 (período experimental), se começaram a se registar os primeiros certificados de óbito em formato eletrónico.
Ao abrigo do Despacho nº 13788/2013, o período experimental do SICO é findado, sendo obrigatória a sua utilização para a certificação dos óbitos ocorridos em território nacional, a partir das 0 horas de 1 de janeiro de 2014. No sentido de acompanhar os progressos tecnológicos, foi criada e desenvolvida a aplicação móvel SICO que permite ao médico facilmente aceder a este sistema de informação.
