Umbertide, l’antica Fratta
Collocata nell’Alta Valle del Tevere, Umbertide sorge alla confluenza del torrente Reggia con il fiume Tevere. Sebbene si parli di una Pitulum di età romana, le sue origini rimangono incerte. Nel XII secolo è ricordata con il nome di Fratta filiorum Uberti, in quanto feudo di discendenti di Umberto, marchese di Toscana. Nel 1189 uno di questi, Ugolino di Uguccione, sottomise all’autorità di Perugia le sue terre, tra le quali il castello di Fratta.
Il Museo di Santa Croce: scrigno dell’arte del Signorelli
Nella trecentesca chiesa di Santa Croce ha sede il Museo cittadino.
La pala della Deposizione sull’altare maggiore, dipinta da Luca Signorelli nel 1516, è l’unica fra i tanti lavori su tavola del maestro cortonese a trovarsi ancora nel suo sito originale. La stessa caratteristica, alquanto insolita per un museo, si verifica anche per i dipinti posti sugli altari laterali.
