Il Complesso Museale di San Francesco, Montefalco
Cuore del Complesso museale di Montefalco è la Chiesa di San Francesco, costruita tra il 1335 e il 1338 dai Frati Minori. La chiesa, a pianta rettangolare è composta da una navata centrale che si conclude con un’abside pentagonale, stupendamente affrescata da Benozzo Gozzoli con Storie della Vita di San Francesco (1452), uno tra i più importanti cicli rinascimentali interamente conservato.
Alla decorazione delle cappelle laterali lavorarono Jacopo Vincioli, Giovanni di Corraduccio, Ascensidonio Spacca, mentre l'affresco nella controfacciata, Natività con l’Eterno in gloria tra due angeli e l’Annunciazione, è stato realizzato nel 1503 da Pietro Vannucci detto il Perugino.
Attorno a questo centro pulsante si dispongono, lungo il percorso, preziose raccolte d’arte: la pinacoteca, la cripta con reperti archeologici e frammenti lapidei, le antiche cantine del convento francescano, ed anche gli spazi dedicati alle mostre d’arte contemporanea.
