ويُعد الحسين (ع) أحد أصحاب الكساء الذين نزلت في حقهم آية التطهير والمباهلة. ووردت روايات كثيرة عن جدّه (ص) في فضله (ع)، منها: الحسن والحسين سيدا شباب أهل الجنّة وإنّ الحسين مصباح هاد وسفينة نجاة.
وفي العقود الثلاثة التي تلت وفاة النبي (ص) لم يذكر إلا القليل من سيرة الحسين (ع)، فكان سنداً لأبيه أمير المؤمنين (ع) حينما تولّى الخلافة، وشارك في تلك الحقبة بجميع حروبها.
