کوروش کبیر (۵۷۶-۵۲۹ پیش از میلاد)،(ذوالقرنین) همچنین معروف به کوروش دوم نخستین شاه و بنیان‌گذار دودمان شاهنشاهی هخامنشی است. کوروش کبیر، به‌خاطر بخشندگی، بنیان گذاشتن حقوق بشر، پایه‌گذاری نخستین امپراتوری چند ملیتی و بزرگ جهان، آزاد کردن برده‌ها و بندیان، احترام به دین‌ها و کیش‌های گوناگون، گسترش تمدن و غیره شناخته شده‌است.
نخستین شاه شاهنشاهی هخامنشی بود که در بین سال های ۵۵۹ تا ۵۲۹ پیش از میلاد، بر نواحی گسترده ای از آسیا حکومت می کرد. کوروش در منشور خود که در بابل کشف شده، خودش را «فرزند کمبوجیه، شاه بزرگ انشان، نوادهٔ کوروش، شاه بزرگ انشان، نوادهٔ چیش پیش، شاه بزرگ انشان، از خانواده ای که همیشه پادشاه بوده است» معرفی می کند.

۵۵۸: آغاز پادشاهی کوروش در انشان (فارس) و خوزستان. انتقال پایتخت هخامنشیان به شوش.
۵۵۰: شکست ایشتوویگو شاه ماد از کوروش و پیرو آن فتح هگمتانه. اتحاد ماد و پارس.
۵۴۹ تا ۵۴۸: تسخیر سرزمین‌های پارت، جرجان و احتمالاً ارمنستان توسط کوروش.
۵۴۶: فتح سارد پایتخت لیدی توسط کوروش و شکست کرزوس پادشاه لیدی.
۵۳۹: فتح بابل ثروتمندترین شهر غرب آسیا توسط کوروش. سقوطی که با مقاومت کم سپاه بابل در کرانه ساحلی رود دجله به وقوع پیوست
۵۳۹: کوروش به یهودیان آواره اجازه داد تا به اورشلیم بازگردند و در آنجا آزادانه برای خود کنیسه بسازند.
۵۲۹: کوروش به قبایل سکاها در شمال شرق ایران حمله کرد و در جنگ با ماساگتها کشته شد. کوروش کبیر را در پاسارگاد دفن کردند. پس از او کمبوجیه دوم فرزند کوروش به تاج و تخت رسید.
