《大势至菩萨念佛圆通章》是出在《大佛顶首楞严经》里面，本章是出在第 5 卷末。 本章乃专门开示念佛方法的一篇经文，极其简单而扼要。在民国初年，净土宗第 13 代祖师印光大师的极力宣扬之下，它才开始为净土宗行人所重视，乃至认为它是净土宗的 "心经" , 就好像《般若心经》被公认为般若系经典的中心思想一样。这篇《大势至菩萨念佛圆通章》的经文虽然很短，只有 244 个字，然而却是念佛法门中一个非常重要的开示，弥足珍贵。大势至菩萨向佛作汇报，说他是從修 “念佛三昧” 下手。本章即是介绍他如何亲证念佛三昧的宝贵经验。
