小笠原諸島

硫黄島には、海上自衛隊の硫黄島航空基地隊等と、航空自衛隊の硫黄島基地隊が所在している。 南鳥島には、海上自衛隊硫黄島航空基地隊の南鳥島航空派遣隊が常駐して飛行場施設などを管理している。また、国土交通省の気象庁及び関東地方整備局なども施設を設け、その職員等に限り、業務目的で常駐している。
英語では小笠原諸島はOgasawara Islands、小笠原群島はBonin Islands（ボニン・アイランズ）である。「ボニン」は江戸時代の「無人島」（ぶにんしま、ぶにんじま）という呼び名に由来する。
