(以下節錄自淨空法師主講，劉承符居士記，般若波羅蜜多心經講記)般若波羅蜜多心經是唐朝玄奘大師翻譯的，大師是河南偃師人，姓陳名褘。13歲在洛陽淨土寺出家，貞觀3年到印度求學，貞觀19年回國，歷128國。玄奘大師受業於戒賢論師及勝軍居士，他的老師是一僧一俗。大師圓寂於公元664年，世壽65歲。由印返國後，翻經19年，翻成73部，1330卷，份量之多為譯經師之冠。這部心經譯本是大師在貞觀22年5月24日於終南山翠微宮完成的。
般若波羅蜜多心經八個字，可分四個段落，1、般若，2、波羅蜜多，3、心，4、經。「般若」是梵語，古印度的言語，般若的別名很多，如真性、實相、首楞嚴、中道、畢竟空等等。佛說出如此眾多名字指一件事，目的是不讓我們執著名相，而是讓我們體會真實的意趣。通常般若翻作智慧，智是照見，知俗諦，慧是揀別，照真諦。換言之，智有照了的功能，慧有鑑別的作用。通達有為之事相為智，通達無為之空理為慧。總之，照了一切法不可得，通達一切法確實無有障礙，乃真智慧。
「波羅蜜多」的波羅譯為彼岸，蜜多譯為到，合之即彼岸到。其意義如中國人的成語「到家了」很接近。如畫畫功夫純熱，說他的功夫到家了，也就是「究竟圓滿」之義。般若波羅蜜多即「究竟圓滿之智慧」。梵文之到彼岸，古人註解中說，把生死比作此岸，把涅槃比作彼岸，有般若圓滿的智慧才能離開生死，證得大涅槃的彼岸。
心字是中文，心經為大般若經之綱領，所以稱為大般若之中心，亦比喻人的心臟，至為重要。最後經字是通題，佛所說的言教，經弟子們結集成文，皆稱為「經」。古來大德解釋經字，常用「貫、攝、常、法」四字。「貫」是貫穿所說之義理，即每一部佛經都是一篇有系統的文章，從頭到尾一直貫穿下來，絕無雜亂；「攝」為攝持所化之眾生，使讀者百讀不厭，如磁鐵吸針一樣。「常」是古今不易，「法」是遠近同遵，確實超越時間與空間，即今人所說之真理。
佛經中教授修行的方法有三︰持戒、修定、修慧。持戒與修定須以般若智慧來指導，一般人和菩薩之所以不同，在於智慧的有無。《心經》是智慧的經典，從修行中得到智慧，達到開悟的境界，始能得到真正的解脫與自在。專心念佛，真正能得到般若真實智慧。顯說是告訴我們開智慧，幫助滅煩惱障。密說是告訴我們把分別妄想放下，恢復清淨心，滅罪除障，是大福德。在修學中最怕妄想執著。楞嚴經說：「知見立知，是無明本。」又說：「狂心不歇，歇即菩提。」一句佛號念到底，放下身心世界，大般若即現前。
