根據淨空師父上人於2009年5月20日在華藏淨宗學會網站上的緣起中提示，「淨宗學會」乃民初夏蓮居大士所提倡，為中國古代蓮社之現代化。淨空師父上人受蓮大士傳人念公囑託，於海外鼓勵同修建立淨宗學會，至今全球百餘所學會，遍布五大洲。各學會行政、財務所有運作各自獨立，互助合作。為方便同修學習，淨空師父上人特為編纂《淨宗同學修行守則》，標明三福、六和、三學、六度、十願，為淨宗同學修習總綱，並擇選諸經金句，與同學共勉。故知淨宗學會之根本精神，總不離印祖慈訓：「敦倫盡分，閑邪存誠，老實念佛，求生淨土」，以倫理、道德、因果教育自行化他，自度度他。於此天災人禍愈演愈烈的大時代，更應重視因果教育，於日常生活中，時時以《感應篇》、《弟子規》、《十善業》為自己言行思想之規範，懺悔改過，歸心彌陀，求生淨土，如此，則不負蓮大士、念公倡建淨宗學會之良苦用心。
