Sicuramente uno dei più spettacolari paesaggi rupestri d’Italia che testimonia l’antico rapporto tra natura e uomo, si trova in Basilicata, a Matera a pochi chilometri di distanza dal confine con la Puglia.Il Parco Regionale Archeologico Storico Naturale delle Chiese Rupestri del Materano, più semplicemente detto Parco della Murgia Materana, è caratterizzato da una roccia tenera costituita da profondi solchi che disegnano rupi, forre, grotte, gravine utilizzate dall’uomo che vi si è insediato sin dalla preistoria. Esso è compreso tra le contrade poste tra la S.S. 7, la S.P. Matera–Ginosa–Montescaglioso e la S.S. 175.
L’uomo ha popolato la Murgia sin dai tempi preistorici, con stazionamenti risalenti al Paleolitico (Grotta dei pipistrelli) e all’epoca Neolitica (villaggio di Murgecchia, di Murgia Timone e di Trasanello). Numerose testimonianze di queste fasi si conservano presso il Museo Nazionale "Domenico Ridola" a Matera, mentre testimonianze del periodo greco (VIII-VII secolo a.C.) e romano (dal III a C.) affiorano più numerose sul versante di Montescaglioso.
Si suppone che nel corso di questi secoli il territorio murgico fosse dominio di pastori e mandriani che abitavano in piccoli villaggi ricavati dall’adattamento di piccole caverne naturali.
La flora del Parco Regionale della Murgia Materana comprende 923 specie, cioè circa un sesto dell’intera flora nazionale e un terzo di quella regionale: un numero ragguardevole per un’area di circa 8000 ettari di superficie.
Un centinaio sono le specie rare e rarissime tra cui molte entità di irradiazione mediterraneo-orientale, 61 quelle di nuova segnalazione per la flora lucana e ben 36 sono le specie endemiche e subendemiche cioè quelle entità con areale costituito da aree geografiche abbastanza ristrette.
