Publicada en octubre de 1928, ‘Orlando: una biografía’ (título original: ‘Orlando: A Biography’) terminó siendo la novela más popular en vida de su autora, Virginia Woolf (Londres, 25 de enero de 1882-Lewes, Sussex, 28 de marzo de 1941).Sin embargo, no fue sólo la relativa brevedad de la obra ni por su accesibilidad para el lector medio la que le dio su popularidad; sino y tal vez sobre todo por los temas polémicos –para la época– que Woolf aborda en esta historia.
La autora señalaba en la larga vida de Orlando, protagonista excluyente, cuestiones que al momento de la escritura y publicación eran considerados tabúes: la homosexualidad, la sexualidad femenina y el rol de la mujer dentro de una sociedad extremadamente conservadora, a la que aun le costaba rehuir de los rígidos preceptos victorianos.
Basada en la vida de Vita Sackville-West, poeta, novelista, diseñadora de jardines y aristócrata inglesa con quien la escritora había tenido una relación amorosa promediando los 20, Woolf comenta cinco siglos de historia de Gran Bretaña de un modo crítico, especialmente a los historiadores contemporáneos, que tienden a ver la historia como saltos que separan y no como continuidad de cambios paulatinos y contradicciones.
‘Orlando: una biografía’ fue traducida al español por primera vez por Jorge Luis Borges, y es esa la versión que publicamos en esta aplicación.
