Pero la traducción al inglés llegó más lejos: fue el libro más vendido en Estados Unidos en 1919, de acuerdo a Publishers weekly.
Tal fue la repercusión en tierra estadounidense que, en 1921, June Mathis (ejecutiva de la MGM y una de las mujeres más influyentes de Hollywood en los 20) la adaptó para el cine, con dirección de Rex Ingram y el protagónico a cargo de Rodolfo Valentino, la superestrella cinematográfica del momento.
