Description
Una sola novela le bastó la Emily Brontë (1818-1848) para conseguir fama perenne: 'Cumbres Borrascosas'. No obstante, vale advertir que recién después de su muerte la obra fue publicada con su nombre al pie, ya que había sido editada en 1847 con el seudónimo de Ellis Bell.Dos años más tarde del fallecimiento, la obra se reeditaría bajo el verdadero nombre de la autora, junto con una selección de sus poemas y una nota biográfica de su hermana Charlotte, que se incluye como apéndice.
"'Cumbres Borrascosas' se talló en un taller natural, con herramientas sencillas y materiales del lugar. La escultora encontró un bloque de granito en un páramo solitario: Mirándolo, vio que de la peña podía hacerse la cabeza, salvaje, oscura, siniestra. Una forma modelada al menos con un elemento grandioso: fuerza. Trabajó con un cincel tosco y sin modelo, sólo con la visión de sus reflexiones. Con tiempo y trabajo, la piedra cobró forma humana; y ahí está: colosal, oscura y amenazadora, medio estatua y medio roca. En el primer sentido, terrible y diabólica; en el segundo, casi hermosa, pues su tono es de un gris suave y la cubre el musgo del páramo; y el brezo, con sus campanillas radiantes y su balsámica fragancia, crece fielmente al pie del gigante..."
Con esas palabras cierra Charlotte Brontë el prólogo a la edición de 1850, ya con la firma de su hermana, y que acompaña las innumerables ediciones que desde entonces sedujeron a sucesivas generaciones de lectores y críticos, justamente por ser una obra “colosal, oscura y amenazadora, medio estatua y medio roca…”
