Description
Armando Duval es un joven estudiante de derecho que se enamora perdidamente de Margarita, una cortesana constantemente rodeada de pretendientes a los que suele entretener en su apartamento de lujo. Un ramo de camelias blancas también adorna siempre su disipada vida.En un principio, ella rechaza los avances del nuevo pretendiente, pero finalmente acepta su afecto y durante un tiempo viven juntos y nada parece ensombrecer el romance... Quizá, nada más que los frecuentes ataques de tuberculosis que acosan a Margarita desde hace tiempo.
Pero el padre de Armando, a quien le preocupa más la reputación de su familia que la velicidad de su hijo, convence subrepticiamente a Margarita para poner fin a la relación. Ella duda, pero finalmente cede y se escapa a hombre rico, dejando apenas una nota para Armando.
Al hallar la carta, Armando queda destrozado y, con el tiempo, su dolor se convierte en rabia, la que lo lleva a sumergirse en la vida nocturna parisina, vinculándose con otra cortesana llamada Olympe, otra cortesana.
Cuando él se encuentra nuevamente con Margarita en un casino, la denuncia públicamente, y Margarita renuncia a su vida prostibularia y rápidamente se encuentra a sí misma en una deuda masiva.
