Publicada originalmente en 1899 en tres entregas sucesivas de la revista Blackwood's Magazine con el título de ‘Heart of Darkness’, 'El corazón de las tinieblas' es la novela más reconocida y popular de Joseph Conrad.Ambientado en algún sitio indefinido de África, la obra se publicó en forma de libro en 1902 y está inspirada en los seis meses que su autor pasó en el Congo colonizado y devastado por el rey Leopoldo II de Bélgica.
La historia se centra en un marinero llamado Charlie Marlow, quien narra la travesía que realizó años atrás por un río africano en busca de un tal Kurtz, el jefe de una explotación de marfil, y que a lo largo de la novela adquiere un carácter simbólico y ambiguo.
El viaje de Marlow al corazón del continente africano se transforma así en un descenso a los infiernos, pero también en una crítica al imperialismo occidental y una investigación acerca de la locura y la condición humana.
