"اَبوالنَّجم احمَدبن قوص‌بن احمد منوچهری دامغانی" شناخته شده به "منوچهری " در سال های پایانی قرن پنجم هجری قمری در دامغان زاده شد.کودکی او در شهر زادگاهش گذشت و در آن شهر آموزش دید. دانش او در ادبیات و نجوم و طب و فلسفه از سروده هایش معلوم می شود.
منوچهری در جوانی به دربار "زیاریان" در طبرستان راه پیدا کرد و لقب "منوچهری" را از اسم شاه "گرگان " و "طبرستان" به نام " فلك المعالى منوچهر بن شمس المعالى قابوس بن وشمگیر" گرفت. او سپس به "ری" و از آن جا به "غزنه" رفت و شاعر دربار "مسعود غزنوی" شد.
منوچهری جوانمرگ شد. او در سال 432 هجری قمری درگذشت. کسی نمی داند مزار منوچهری کجاست، اما در دامغان بنایی تاریخی وجود دارد به نام "گنبد زنگوله" که حدس می زنند در دوره ی ایلخانان ساخته شده باشد. برخی می گویند این جا آرامگاه منوچهری دامغانی است.
