国藩看相的学问——《冰鉴》这一部书。它所包涵看相的理论，不同其他的相书。他说：“功名看气宇”，就是这个人有没有功名，要看他的风度。“事业看精神”，这个当然，一个人精神不好，做一点事就累了，还会有什么事业前途呢？“穷通看指甲”，一个人有没有前途看指甲，指甲又与人的前途有什么关系呢？绝对有关系。根据生理学，指甲是以钙质为主要成分，钙质不够，就是体力差，体力差就没有精神竞争。有些人指甲不像瓦型的而是扁扁的，就知道这种人体质非常弱，多病。“寿夭看脚踵”，命长不长，看他走路时的脚踵。我曾经有一个学生，走路时脚根不点地，他果然短命。这种人第一是短命，第二是聪明浮燥，所以交待他的事，他做得很快，但不踏实。“如要看条理，只在言语中”，一个人思想如何，就看他说话是否有条理，这种看法是很科学的。。很多人头容易昏沉，头脑不清楚，智慧不够，定力不足，杂念多，反应慢，这都是脑不健康的表现。脑很重要，就像中国人说的：“一分精神，一分事业”。譬如说中国有些药说补肾，其实补肾就是补脑，肾跟脑连在一起。
有人气质太虚，就是脑力不够，定力不够，身体也不好，所以走路脚跟不踮地，做事情也是脚跟不踮地。气不够，还要补气，把气好好补起，脑力、定力一切会好起来，气充足了，运气也会好，一个人气充足了运气就会好起来，财源就会发了。财气财气，财也来，气也来。你看那个不得志的人，或者生意失败的人，一看气色就知道了；你看要去借钱的人，连话也讲不出来，告诉你，就是气瘪了的样子。
中国道家有几句话：还精补脑长生不老；炼精化气，炼气化神，练神还虚。证人至少有一个，我做证人。我九十岁现在的记忆力，比年轻时还要好，精力也更好。不过有时候，中国人一句老话，倚老卖老，故意跟你们装胡涂。比如说，那些跟我很久的人知道，六七十岁时，我的头发比现在白得多了，现在白头发少了。这就是告诉大家，生命靠自己保养，保持健康长寿，甚至想健康长寿，必须要学静。我们大家要修养要学静，最高的原理，不靠别的方法，就是反省观照自己，乃至不加任何判断的观照观察自己。譬如我们知道这个妄想可以分成三个阶段：过去、现在、未来。过去已经没有了，未来还没有来，说现在也没有了。所以你静下来的时候，不要怕妄想多，你那个知性看到妄想，过去已过去，未来还没来，就看着现在，当下即空。常常这样反省、体会，时间一长，你就会空灵了。如果你把握这个空灵，越把握得久越好，这个把握久了以后，你的身心、脑力、体力什么都转变了。照那个原理，生命是可以改变的。
