Description
The CAINTUR project (The intelligent characterization of mobility in tourist destinations), is an innovation project led by the Canary Cluster of Transport and logistics (CTTL). It is subsidized by the Canarian Agency for Research, Innovation and the Information Society of the Canary Islands Government and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER).General Objective of the project:
The objective of the project is to investigate and advance in the data collection and characterization of the trips made by tourists in the destination. It is the first stage for the development of Mobility Plans, and therefore the implementation of policies and a more energy efficient transport system, less pollution and adapted to the requirements and demands of tourists.
Specific objective:
Obtaining a specific methodology for the analysis and evaluation of the mobility of tourists, this is based on a basic tool (app) that allows the characterization of the trips of tourists motivating their interaction.
Development of the mobile technological application (app) that allows personalized surveys and the capture of relevant data of its users. The application performs the collection and support of data from the mobility of tourists.
Content of mobile application (app):
The application (free) allows to locate the movements of those tourists who meet the following two criteria.
- Travel more than 100 m away from the accomodation.
- Stay in that place (radio 50 m) for at least 20 minutes.
The application makes a simple questionnaire at the beginning, without recording personal identity data, one of the questions is about the time that the tourist stays on the island
During this stay, the app will activate only 1 day at random, in such a way that the rest of the days the data will not be recorded and the next day the tourist will be able to eliminate it from his mobile.
The application will ask the tourist, about each of the trips that meet the above conditions, only two issues (which are activated by drop-down):
Reason for the trip: shopping, beach, tourist attraction….
Modes of transport: rental car, bus, tram.
The data collected is anonymized, without personal data.
Taks to be delevoped:
Within the tasks to be developed two should be performed in tourist establishments:
Campaign to attract users to the mobile application (100) in some establishments on the island (North and South).
Traditional mobility surveys campaign, in situ, (100) in establishments on the island (North and South).
Data collection campaign through the mobile application
It will be developed during four days, coinciding with the days and timetable of massive arrival of tourists to the hotels. Two interviewers will approach the tourists while they wait in the hall of the hotel to check in and the keys.
They will be briefly explained what the project consists of, the objective and they will be given an explanatory brochure.
It will be suggested that they download the app (free) and it is proposed as an incentive that, once the survey is completed, a code will be obtained and after showing it to the hotel reception the tourist will be able to enjoy free Wi-Fi for the rest of their stay.
The survey will be activated in the first third of the duration of their stay, so as the tourist can enjoy the free Wi-Fi connection.
For this, it is essential to have the collaboration of the hotel.
Traditional mobility surveys campaign
It consists of conducting face-to-face surveys in the halls of the hotels. The interviewers will approach the tourists, and explain briefly what the project consists of and the objective.
Then they will be asked for information about their stay and the trips made the previous day.
It is very possible that these surveys are conducted on the Street and not in a tourist accommodation.
