Description

EpDetect will monitor the movement of the person while the phone is in their pocket or worn on a belt. The software will differentiate the movements associated with epilepsy from normal movement.

When a seizure is detected it will warn the person that it is about to send an SMS message to a carer, in the case of a false alarm the person will be able to cancel the SMS alert. The SMS message contains time, GPS coordinates (if the phone has GPS) and a short message, allowing the carer to raise the alarm and take remedial action or call an ambulance. When the person recovers they press a button to cancel the alarm, which will initiate an end of emergency SMS message.

Epdetect was developed by Kenneth Austin and Robert Dlugosz.

3 ★This is a great idea, however when I installed this app on my Samsung Galaxy S6, I could not find the menu so I could change settings and enter my caregiver's information. Furthermore, it appears to only be good for people who have very violent tonic-clonic seizures, which I don't have often. When I tested the app, I had to shake my phone very violently before it detected a "seizure." Maybe find a way to increase or decrease the sensitivity of the motion detection, and also a way to detect other kinds of seizures as well.

2 ★I love this application, but it simply does not work on my device. It force quits whenever I attempt to press a button, meaning I can't dismiss any alarms. Ever. I look forward to updates.

1 ★Wonderful concept but crashes immediately upon opening .. if it does open, it crashes as soon as any button is pressed .. it also continues to run in the background, even after crashing .. uninstalled

4 ★I tried this app recently during my course related research on epilepsy. I am absolutely astonished with the simplicity yet effectiveness of such an app. To summarize, this app is useful for those with Tonic-clonic (or grand mal) seizures. App is very simple that you have to keep it open as process and it will keep detecting motion on your device. If your device shakes violently and repeatedly like during the clonic phase of the seizures, app will start an alarm and will ask you to keep an on-screen button pressed for 5 seconds, which is fairly simple for normal persons but almost impossible for person undergoing seizures. I was able to induce warning in app by violent artificial movements but the detection looks robust enough against false positives. I didn't checked this but it seems if a warning is not attained within half minute, it can send text with GPS info to a caregiver. This can be life-saving at times. I again appreciate this simple yet great app. I gave 4 stars as there is still scope for improvement (app was crashing each time after warning in my device). But it sure is promising. I recommend developers continue on similar concept for other emergencies.
