Description
Nacido en la localidad uruguaya de Salto en 1878 y radicado en la Argentina, Horacio Quiroga es uno de los mayores cuentistas latinoamericanos de todos los tiempos, con una obra que se sitúa entre la declinación del modernismo y la emergencia de las vanguardias.Las tragedias marcaron la vida del escritor: su padre murió en un accidente de caza y su padrastro y posteriormente su primera esposa se suicidaron; además, él mismo mató accidentalmente de un disparo a su amigo Federico Ferrando.
Influido por autores como Edgar Allan Poe, Rudyard Kipling y Guy de Maupassant, en los textos que integran ‘Cuentos de la selva’ (1918) aparece la inspiración de la selva misionera, donde se radicó en 1909 y conoció los animales, los mitos y las leyendas que terminaron por cuajar en estas historias para niños (y adultos).
Además escribió los relatos de ‘Cuentos de amor de locura y de muerte’ (1917), ‘El salvaje’ (1920), la obra teatral ‘Las sacrificadas’ (1920), ‘Anaconda’ (1921), ‘El desierto’ (1924), ‘La gallina degollada y otros cuentos’ (1925), ‘Los desterrados’ (1926), ‘Pasado amor’ (1929) y ‘Más allá’ (1935).
Hospitalizado en Buenos Aires por algunas dolencias, a Quiroga se le descubrió un cáncer gástrico, enfermedad que fue lo que lo impulsó al suicidio ingiriendo cianuro, en 1937.
