باباطاهر عارف، شاعر و دوبیتی‌سرای اواخر سده چهارم و اواسط سده پنجم هجری .باباطاهر کی زاده شد و خاندانش چی بود و کی مرد مشخص نیست. تنها چیزی که می دانیم او مردی درویش مسلک و وارسته بود و شاید لقب عریان را نیز به همین دلیل به او داده باشند.
می گوینند طغرل سلجوقی در سفر همدان او را دیده است و شرخ این دیدار را این طوری نوشته اند: «شنیدم که چون سلطان طغرل‌بیگ به همدان آمد، از اولیا سه پیر بودند: باباطاهر، باباجعفر و شیخ همشا که در کوهکی بر همدان که آن را خضر خوانند، ایستاده بودند.نظر سلطان بر ایشان افتاد. کوکبه لشکر بداشت و پیاده شد و با وزیر ابونصرالکندری نزد ایشان آمد. باباطاهر پاره‌ای شیفته گونه بود. او را گفت: با خلق خدا چه خواهی کرد؟ سلطان گفت: آنچه تو فرمایی، بابا گفت: آن کن که خدا می فرماید: ان الله یأمر بالعدل والاحسان. سلطان بگریست و گفت: چنین کنم. بابا دستش بگرفت و گفت: پذیرفتی؟ سلطان گفت آری"
