محمّد وحشی بافقی در دوران حکومت شاه "تهماسب صفوفی" در شهر "بافق"،" یزد" زاده شد. کودکی او در بافق گذشت در همان شهر دانش اندوزی را آغاز کرد.وحشی بافقی در جوانی راهی یزد شد و مدتی در آن جا ماند و سپس به "کاشان" رفت و در آن شهر مکتبداری کرد. مقصد بعدی سفرهای او هرمز و هندوستان بود. او پس از گشت و گذار در هندوستان به یزد بازگشت و تا پایان عمر در این شهر ماند.
وحشی بافقی هرگز همسری نگزید و به مال و ثروت دست پیدا نکرد. او از این نداری ها و سختی ها و تنهایی هایش در غزلیات خود فراوان نالیده است.
وحشی بافقی دو منظومه ی عاشقانه دارد. "ناظر و منظور" نخستین آن است که عشق های هنجارشکنانه ی پسران شاه و وزیری را روایت می‌کند. و دومی "شیرین و فرهاد" به سبک آثار "نظامی گنجوی " است. وحشی خود نتوانست مثنوی "شیرین و فرهاد" را تمام کند و باقی آن را دو شاعر شیرازی، "وصال شیرازی" و "صابر شیرازی" که هر دو از شاعران دوران قاجار بوده اند، سروده اند.
وحشی بافقی در سال 991 هجری قمری در شهر یزد درگذشت و در همان شهر به خاک سپرده شد.
