محمد حسن رهی معیری متخلص به “ رهی” در سال 1288 خورشیدی در تهران زاده شد. او پسر یکی از درباریان "قاجار" بود که لقب و عنوان داشت. پدرش "موید خلوت" و نیایش"معیرالممالک"، “نظام الدوله” بود.رهی یکی از دانش آموختگان نظام جدید آموزشی است. او دوره ی آموزش ابتدایی و متوسطه را در تهران گذراند و وارد دولت شد و در پست های مختلف کار کرد. او در سال 1322 خورشیدی به ریاست کل انتشارات و تبلیغات “وزارت پیشه و هنر” رسید.
رهی در انجمن موسیقی ملی و انجمن فرهنگستان ایران نیز فعالیت می کرد و عضو بود و در سال های پایانی عمر با رادیو به ویژه برنامه ی "گل ها" همکاری می کرد.برنامه ی با "کاروان شعر" جز به یاد ماندی ترین برنامه های شعر و شاعری "رادیو ملی ایران" است که رهی آن را رهبری و اجرا می کرد.
او در مورد تلاش های ادبی اش می گوید:" من در همه انواع شعر از قبیل غزل، قصیده، مثنوی، رباعی و… آثاری دارم. نخستین ترانه را در سال ۱۳۱۳ بر روی آهنگ آقای بدیع زاده ساختم که به “شد خزان” معروف شد.
میراث رهی معیری در ترانه سرایی و تصنیف پردازی برای ایرانیان بسیار پر و پیمان است. آثاری مثل: "کاروان"، "نوای نی"، "من از روز ازل"، "اشک و آه"، "دیدی که رسوا شد دلم"، "شب جدایی"، "لاله خونین"، "دیدی ای مه"، "راز دل"، "داغ جدایی" و... که به وسیله ی آهنگسازان چیره دست و نام آور آهنگ گذاری و خوانندگان خوش صدا خوانده شده است، اشاره کرد.
رهی معیری همسری نگزید و در سال 1347 خورشیدی وقتی هنوز 59 سال بیش تر نداشت، درگذشت و جسمش در در
گورستان ظهیرالدوله شمیران به خاک سپرده شد.
