Когда были записаны речения, сказать с точностью трудно, возможно, перед I иудейским восстанием, во всяком случае до создания евангельских рассказов, которые были записаны уже после разгрома Иерусалима. Первые записи, поскольку они фиксировали слова Иисуса, по всей вероятности, были анонимны. Как и цитаты из ветхозаветных книг, эти речения вставлялись в устные проповеди в разный контекст и в разных вариантах.
Апокриф Иоанна причисляют к важнейшим источникам для изучения гностицизма.
Апокриф относится к сравнительно недавно открытым источникам. Его краткая версия на коптском языке сохранилась в так называемом Берлинском папирусе 8502 - папирусном кодексе, найденном в Каире в конце XIX в. и приобретенном Берлинским музеем в 1896 г. В рукописи это произведение названо Апокрифом Иоанна. Его первый исследователь К. Шмидт {1} поставил этот документ в связь с гностическим космологическим учением, которое опровергал, вкратце изложив содержание, Ириней (Против ересей. 1.29). Первое издание краткой версии по Берлинскому кодексу осуществил много лет спустя после открытия (в 1955 г.) В. Тилль {2}. Три другие версии (еще одна краткая и две пространные) дошли в собрании коптских рукописей из Наг-Хаммади (кодексы III, II, IV). Их первое издание предприняли М. Краузе и Пахор Лабиб в 1962 г.
