Когда были записаны речения, сказать с точностью трудно, возможно, перед I иудейским восстанием, во всяком случае до создания евангельских рассказов, которые были записаны уже после разгрома Иерусалима. Это речение одновременно полемизирует с идеей установления материального царства божия на земле и со складывающимся учением о "царстве небесном" (выражение это появляется уже у Матфея, заменяя в отдельных речениях словосочетание "царство Божие"). В Евангелии от Филиппа содержится полемика с защитниками учения о непорочном зачатии.
Египетские христиане особо почитали Евангелие от Фомы и Евангелие от Филиппа, первоначально написанные по-гречески и позже переведенные на коптский.
