Las Meditaciones de Marco AurelioAntes de acceder al gobierno del imperio, Marco Aurelio había adquirido el hábito de escribir durante sus viajes cartas diarias a su maestro Marco Cornelio Frontón, a quien comentaba cuestiones de estilo y retórica e informaba sobre el curso de sus estudios y acerca de su delicada salud, castigada por el rígido ascetismo que se imponía; después pasó escribir para sí mismo, y en griego, cuando antes lo había hecho sólo en latín.

Su estilo, influido sin duda por los maestros estoicos, carece sin embargo de la dureza dogmática de Epicteto, de quien adoptó el elogio de la libertad humana, o del tono docto y académico de Seneca. Por el contrario, sus textos denotan un tono muy personal, ya que parten de una reflexión íntima y crítica, y acusan una tendencia a transformar la doctrina en un constante examen de conciencia.

Su gran legado, las Meditaciones o Pensamientos, es el resultado de las reflexiones morales que, ya al final de su vida, fue dejando por escrito, sin seguir un plan estricto o preestablecido. Dividida en doce libros y redactada en griego, la obra se basa en una serie de reflexiones inspiradas por su experiencia cotidiana y deja traslucir la influencia estoica, en particular la de Epicteto. Su visión del hombre es pesimista, pues considera que sus pasiones son el factor principal de la corrupción del mundo, por lo que aconseja perseguir tan sólo aquellos fines que dependan de uno mismo. Es ilustrativo el hecho de que se inspirara tanto en un esclavo como había sido Epicteto y que detestara el poder despótico, a cuyo ejercicio él mismo denominó, irónicamente, «cesarizar».
