Tiene una población de 1.475 habitantes, repartidos entre el casco urbano y las pedanías de Fuentenueva, Venta Micena, y Pozo de la rueda.
Su economía tradicional se ha basado en la agricultura y en la ganadería, destacando su Cordero Segureño, muy apreciado por su incomparable sabor. En los últimos años empieza a desarrollarse una nueva economía en torno a la explotación de los importantes recursos pa-trimoniales, científicos y culturales de la localidad.
