La Edad Contemporánea viene marcada por la venta de las Minas de Riotinto a los ingleses, lo que supone un nuevo modo de colonización económica y cultural en la época victoriana. La actual configuración de la ciudad viene marcada por el hecho de la presencia inglesa a finales del siglo XIX.
