Description
本アプリに収録した「古墳」とは、漠然と「古い時代の墳墓」を指しているわけではありません。日本の歴史における弥生時代に続く考古学上の時期区分である「古墳時代（3世紀中頃～7世紀頃）」に築造された特定の形態の墳丘墓…を指しています。「特定の形態の墳丘墓」とは、前方後円墳、帆立貝形古墳、前方後方墳、双円墳、双方墳、円墳、方墳、長方形墳、六角墳、八角墳、双方中円墳、双方中方墳、上円下方墳、双方中方墳などを基本とし、加えて埋葬施設の一種である横穴や墳丘を石で構築した積石塚などを含みます。
その古墳は、現在全国で約16万基の存在が知られています。全てを収録することは不可能なので、本アプリでは、「重要な古墳」として、主に「国が指定する史跡となっている古墳」及び「国が指定する文化財を出土した古墳」を中心に、約1270例（古墳単体だけでなく古墳群を含む）を収録しています。
本アプリに収録している古墳の立地エリアには、かなり偏りがあることを断っておきます。なぜなら「国に史跡指定された古墳」及び「国の指定文化財を出土した古墳」は、圧倒的に近畿地方（主に畿内）、中国地方及び九州北部に多いからです。これらの地域には、古墳時代（3世紀中頃～7世紀頃）に強力な地方政権や誕生時期のヤマト政権の中枢が存在していました。そして古墳の多くは「権力者の墓」です。当然ながら天皇陵を含む歴史的重要人物の陵墓、地方政権の首長の陵墓、有力な豪族の墳墓、そしてそれらに付随する歴史的に重要な出土遺物などが、上記の地域には多く存在するわけです。こうした理由から全体的な収録地域の偏りについてはご容赦頂きたいと思います。そして、収録地域の偏重を多少なりとも是正するために、関東や首都圏エリアなどについては、国の史跡指定、文化財指定がされていない古墳を意図的に一定数収録しました。
また、本アプリの位置情報を頼りに古墳を訪問しても、必ずしも築造当時のままの墳丘形状をそのまま保っているとは限りません。古墳の多くは、長い歴史の中で盗掘され、また破壊され、何よりも近世、近年になってからは開発のために墳丘が削られたり消滅したものが多いからです。
最後に「国が指定する史跡となっている古墳」及び「国が指定する文化財を出土した古墳」の説明文については、文化庁の「国指定文化財等データベース」から引用しているものが多いことを明記しておきます。
