Syekh Muhammad Arsyad al-Banjari adalah seorang ulama besar fiqih bermazhab Syafi'i dari Martapura, Kalimantan Selatan yang namanya dikenal luas di seantero nusantara pada akhir abad 18. Syekh Muhammad Arsyad al-Banjari lahir di Lok Gabang, Martapura 17 Maret 1710. Dia diyakini adalah keturunan Alawiyyin melalui jalur Sultan Abdurrasyid Mindanao, Filipina.Sebagaimana anak-anak pada umumnya, Muhammad Arsyad bergaul dan bermain dengan teman-temannya.
Namun pada diri Muhammad Arsyad sudah terlihat kecerdasannya melebihi dari teman-temannya.
Begitu pula akhlak budi pekertinya yang halus dan sangat menyukai keindahan. Di antara kepandaiannya adalah seni melukis dan seni tulis. Sehingga siapa saja yang melihat hasil lukisannya akan kagum dan terpukau.
Pada saat Sultan Tahlilullah sedang bekunjung ke kampung Lok Gabang, sultan melihat hasil lukisan Muhammad Arsyad yang masih berumur 7 tahun.
Terkesan akan kejadian itu, maka Sultan meminta pada orang tuanya agar anak tersebut sebaiknya tinggal di istana untuk belajar bersama dengan anak-anak dan cucu Sultan.
