Gerakan Pemuda Ansor didirikan pada tanggal 14 Desember 1949 di Surabaya, sebagai kelanjutan dari “ANSHORU NAHDLATUL ULAMA” (ANU) yang didirikan pada tanggal 24 April 1934.Jika ditelusuri, sejarah kelahiran dan perkembangan GP Ansor tidak bisaa dipisahkan dari sejarah kelahiran Nahdlatul Ulama itu itu sendiri. Pada tahun 1924, di Surabaya berdiri suatu organisasi pmuda yang diberi nama “SYUBBANUL WATHAN” (Pemuda Tanah Air) dibawah pimpinan Abdullah Ubaid. Kegiatan utamanya ialah da’wah keliling, latihan kepemimpinan dan latihan bela diri.
Pada tahun 1930, Syubbanul Wathan melebur diri menjadi “NAHDLATUS SYUBBAN” dan pada tahun 1931 namanya berubah menjadi “PERSATUAN PEMUDA NAHDLATUL ULAMA (PPNU)”. Setahun kemudian, kata “Persatuan” dihilangkan, menjadi Pemuda Nahdlatul Ulama (PNU) dan kemudian berubah lagi menjadi ANSORU NAHDLATUL ULAMA (ANU). Baru pada Muktamar NU ke-9 di Banyuwangi pada tanggal 21 – 26 April 1934 ANU diterima menjadi bagian dari jamiiyah NU.
Selama revolusi fisik, ANU dibekukan. Akan tetapi kemudian muncul ide dari Muhammad Husaini, seorang tokoh ANU dari surabaya, untuk menghidupkan kembali ANU. Dalam pertemuan tersebut, dicapai kesepakatan untuk menghidupkan kembali ANU dengan nama baru yaitu “GERAKAN PEMUDA ANSOR” yang disingkat menjadi GP ANSOR.
