الامامة هي خلافة عن النبوة، قائمة مقامها إلا في تلقي الوحي الإلهي بلا واسطة، و هي امتداد لوظائف النبوة و استمرار لأهدافها و مسؤولياتها بعد إرتحال النبي (صلى الله عليه و آله).ثم أن الإمامة لطف من الله تعالى بعباده، إذ لا بد و إن يكون في كل عصر إمام هادٍ يخلف النبي في وظائفه من هداية البشر و إرشادهم إلى ما فيه الصلاح و السعادة في الدنيا و الآخرة، و ذلك لقول الله تعالى: ﴿ ... إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مُنْذِرٌ وَلِكُلِّ قَوْمٍ هَادٍ ﴾ 1.
هذا و أن الإمامة بإعتبارها منصب إلهي فلا تكون إلا بالنص من الله تعالى على لسان النبي أو لسان الإمام السابق، و ليست الامامة بالاختيار و الانتخاب من قبل الناس أبداً.
