En el Nuevo testamento de la Biblia se contemplan cuatro evangelios, llamados evangelios canónicos y reconocidos como parte de la Revelación por las diferentes confesiones cristianas. Son conocidos con el nombre de sus autores: Mateo, Marcos, Lucas y Juan.San Mateo
Se llama también Leví. Era publicano o recaudador de impuestos de Cafarnaúm. Poco sabemos de él, excepto la composición de su evangelio. Su fin fue probar que Jesús era el Mesías prometido en las Escrituras, por esta cita frecuentemente las profecías cumplidas y explicaba por qué el pueblo judío no lo quiso recibir.
De acuerdo con el propio evangelio de San Mateo (9:9) y el de San Marcos (2:14), Mateo se hallaba en su despacho de recaudación de tributos en Cafarnaúm, junto al mar de Galilea, cuando Jesús le dijo: «Sígueme.»
San Mateo respondió con admirable prontitud a la exhortación al apostolado del Maestro: se despidió con un suntuoso banquete de sus amigos y de su vida pasada y siguió, pobre, los pasos y la doctrina de Jesús de Nazaret.
El Nuevo Testamento no aporta más detalles biográficos sobre su persona, si bien la tradición indica que evangelizó Judea y, posteriormente, fue misionero en Etiopía y Persia.
