대한민국의 자랑인 훈민정음. 제주어는 훈민정음의 대표적인 특징인 ‘아래아’ 표기가 살아있는 유일한 우리말입니다. 하지만 제주어는 지난 2010년 유네스코로부터 소멸 위기에 처한 언어 4단계(소멸될 것이 확실한 언어) 판정을 받았습니다. 제주어에는 제주도의 문화와 역사가 담겨있습니다. 그런 제주어가 사라진다는 건, 대한민국의 문화지도에서 제주도가 사라지는 걸 의미합니다.
다행히 제주어의 가치와 중요성을 절감하는 이들을 중심으로 제주어를 다음 세대에 전하려고 하는 움직임이 일고 있습니다. 도 제주어를 보존하려는 움직임에 동참하고자 하는 마음에서 만들어졌습니다.
은 ㈜시와월드에서 지난해 발간된 (전5권)을 바탕으로 제작되었습니다. 에는 제주도의 대표상징물인 돌하르방을 3D캐릭터로 구현한 ‘제돌이’와 친구들의 재미난 일상이 담겨 있습니다. 또한, 일상에서 자주 쓰이는 50개의 재미난 제주어 단어를 흥미진진한 이야기와 게임을 통해 학습 및 복습할 수 있도록 구성되어 있습니다. 모쪼록 제돌이와 돌하르방 친구들과 함께 학습함으로써, 제주어를 처음 접하는 이들이 제주어를 재미있고 친근한 우리말이라고 생각하기를 바랍니다. 아울러 ‘제주어 지킴이’ 제돌이는 앞으로도 제주어를 지키는 제주 대표 캐릭터로서 오래도록 살아남을 수 있는 ‘문화콘텐츠로서의 제주어’를 모토로 약진해 나아가겠습니다.
