Abarca una superficie total de 840 hectáreas situadas en la comarca de Uribe y se encuentra limitada por el norte por el mar Cantábrico, por el que se encuentran espectaculares acantilados y playas (Barinatxe, Meñakoz, Arriatera y Atxabiribil ), por el noroeste con los municipios de Barrika y Getxo, por el sureste con el municipio de Urduliz y por el suroeste con el de Berango.
El municipio de Sopela destaca por su verde naturaleza, por sus costas, en las que se alternan sus distintas playas con acantilados rocosos llenos de historia y por la amplitud de actividades relacionadas con el ocio y el deporte.
El desarrollo de Sopela ha sido enorme a partir de la década de los 70, como localidad residencial de la comarca del Gran Bilbao. Inicialmente, el municipio era muy conocido por la actividad veraniega, aunque desde los principios de los 80 esta tendencia ha variado. El municipio ha pasado de ser un destino eminentemente turístico, donde los propietarios simplemente venian a veranear, a convertirse en un lugar de residencia habitual de sus habitantes.
Esta actividad ha permitido el nacimiento de asociaciones y centros de interés general para sus habitantes. De ellos podemos destacar la Oficina de Turismo junto con el Punto de Información Turística habilitado cerca de las playas, el Hall Cultural, la nueva Casa de Cultura de Kurtzio, asociaciones relacionadas con el deporte (S.D Ugeraga, Peña txuri Surf, etc), asociaciones de mujeres (Itzartu), asociaciones de música (Barinatxe Taldea, Uribe Bazterra, etc.), asociaciones de comerciantes y un largo etcetera.
Los dólmenes de Munarrikolanda y el asentamiento de Kurtzio demuestran que la existencia de Sopela se remonta a la prehistoria, ya que en ambos yacimientos se han descubierto restos arqueológicos de asentamientos utilizados por el ser humano en el antepasado.
El descubrimiento de diverso material cerámico en el entorno de la iglesia renacentista de San Pedro indican la presencia romana.

Sopelako Udalerria Bizkaiko lurralde historikoaren barnean aurkitzen da, Euskal Herrian.
Uribe kosta eskualdeko 840 hektarea hartzen ditu. Iparraldean kantauri itsasoa aurki dezakegu, bere labar eta hodartza ikusgarriekin (Barinatxe, Meñakoz, Arriatera eta Atxabiribil), iparekialdea Barrika eta Getxoko udalerriak, ipar-mendebaldea Urdulizko udalerria eta hegoaldea Berangoko udalerriarekin mugatuta dago.
