USGS DRG topographic maps:
The 7.5-minute maps (1:24.000/1:25.000) are the best maps for outdoor activities in the USA. Although some of the maps are quite old, they contain many small pathes and 4WD tracks that are missing in new USTopos, Google, Bing and OSM maps.
DRGs (Digital Raster Graphics) were produced from 1995 to 2001 by U.S. Geological Survey. DRGs have been made for all quadrangles in the USGS map series.
New US Topo Maps:
US Topo maps are a graphic synthesis of The National Map data files and are produced in the familiar 7.5-minute by 7.5- minute geographic format. Current US Topo map layers include an orthoimage base, transportation, geographic names, topographic contours, boundaries, hydrography and woodlands. Also included are the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) and the United States National Grid.

5 ★We have used all the GPS units, from all the major manufacturers, from the $90 models to the $700+ models. This $10 app, paired with the Android you already own and are probably carrying with you anyways, is a much better tool for navigating in remote areas. Marking, selecting and displaying waypoints, recording, saving and displaying tracks is intuitive and simple. The available base maps are excellent and the ability to save and use later without a cell signal is imperative.

5 ★Perfect. I used the app when I was in the Army, because it could provide the location in MGRS and had various different maps (including WGS84, different type of topos, and satellite images). Now after my retirement, I use it just as much for walking/hiking trails in my area. The OSM outdoor overlay is the best! I've "discovered" hundreds of miles of new trails that are "just out my door" with this overlay, because they don't show up in Google Maps! Thank you!
