ইস্তিগফার মানে হলো ক্ষমা প্রার্থনা করা। আল্লাহ হলেন ‘গাফির’ ক্ষমাকারী, ‘গফুর’ ক্ষমাশীল, ‘গফফার’ সর্বাধিক ক্ষমাকারী। ইস্তিগফার একটি স্বতন্ত্র ইবাদত; কোনো গুনাহ বা পাপ মাফ করার জন্য এই ইবাদত করা হয় না। যেমন: নামাজ, রোজা, হজ ইত্যাদি ইবাদত দ্বারা গুনাহ মাফ হয়; কিন্তু এসব ইবাদত করার জন্য গুনাহ করা শর্ত নয়। তওবা ও ইস্তিগফার আল্লাহ তাআলার অতি পছন্দের একটি ইবাদত। তাই প্রিয় নবী হজরত মুহাম্মদ (সা.) নিষ্পাপ হওয়া সত্ত্বেও প্রতিদিন ৭০ থেকে ১০০ বার তওবা ও ইস্তিগফার করতেন। অনুরূপ ইমানের পর নামাজ প্রধান ও সর্বশ্রেষ্ঠ ইবাদত হওয়া সত্ত্বেও এই নামাজ আদায়ের পর তিনবার ইস্তিগফার পড়া সুন্নত। অর্থাৎ ইস্তিগফার শুধু পাপের পরে নয়, ইবাদতের পরেও করা হয়। যেমন হজের পর ইস্তিগফার করা বিষয়ে কোরআনে উল্লেখ আছে, ‘(হজ শেষে) তারপর তোমরা বেরিয়ে পড়ো, যেভাবে মানুষ চলে যাচ্ছে এবং আল্লাহর কাছে ক্ষমা চাও। নিশ্চয়ই আল্লাহ তাআলা ক্ষমাশীল, পরম দয়ালু।’ (সুরা-২ বাকারা, আয়াত: ১৯৯)।ইস্তিগফার সম্বন্ধে কোরআনে আছে, ‘তোমরা তোমাদের রবের কাছে ক্ষমা প্রার্থনা করো, নিশ্চয়ই তিনি মহাক্ষমাশীল।’ (সুরা-৭১ নূহ, আয়াত: ১০)। ‘অতঃপর তোমার রবের প্রশংসাসহ পবিত্রতা বর্ণনা করো এবং তাঁর কাছে ক্ষমা প্রার্থনা করো।’ (সুরা-১১০ নাসর, আয়াত: ৩)। ‘আর আল্লাহ তাআলা আজাব দেবেন না তাদের, আপনি তাদের মাঝে থাকা অবস্থায়; আর আল্লাহ তাদের আজাব দেবেন না, যখন তারা ইস্তিগফার করে।’ (সুরা-৮ আনফাল, আয়াত: ৩৩)। ইস্তিগফার সম্পর্কে হাদিসে আছে, রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.) বলেন, ‘যে যত মুমিন বান্দার জন্য ইস্তিগফার করবে, সে তাদের সবার সমপরিমাণ নেকি লাভ করবে।’ (সিয়ারে কাবির, তাবরানি)।
