الاسم: أحمد تقي الدين بن شهاب الدين عبدالحليم بن أبي البركات مجد الدين بن تيمية، الحرَّاني، الدمشقي (أبو العباس).
ولد بحرَّان يوم الاثنين 10 من شهر ربيع الأول سنة 661 ه
تُوفِّي والدُه وعمره 22 سنة، سنة 682هـ.
قام مقام والده في مشيخة التدريس في هذه السن المبكرة، بدار الحديث السكرية في 2 المحرم 683هـ، وحضر درسَه كبار علماء دمشق.
قال الذهبي عن ابن تيمية: "إنه صار من أكابر العلماء في حياة شيوخه... ولعل تصانيفه في هذا الوقت تكون أربعةَ آلاف كُرَّاسٍ وأكثر، وفسَّر كتاب الله -تعالى- مدة سنين من صدره أيامَ الجُمَع، وكان يتوقَّد ذكاءً، وسماعاته من الحديث كثيرة، وشيوخه أكثر من مائتي شيخ، ومعرفته بالتفسير إليها المنتهى، وحفظه للحديث ورجاله وصحيحه وسقيمه مما لا يُلحق فيه، وأما نقله للفقه ولمذاهب الصحابة والتابعين، فضلاً عن المذاهب الأربعة، فليس له نظير، وأما معرفتُه بالملل والنِّحَل، والأصول والكلام، فلا أعلم له فيه مثيلاً، ويدري جملةً صالحة من اللغة، وعربيَّتُه قوية جدًّا، وأما معرفته بالتاريخ والسير فعجبٌ عجيب"
