বিশ্বের জনসংখ্যার আনুমানিক শতকরা ৩০ ভাগের বেশি মানুষ ২০৩০ সালের মধ্যে শহরে বসবাস করবে। এতে বাসস্থান ও অন্যান্য কাজে ব্যবহারের ফলে বহু ফসলী জমি হারিয়ে যাবে এবং পরিবেশ ও জলবায়ু হুমকির সম্মুখীন হবে। ফলে পৃথিবীতে প্রজাতির বিলুপ্তি, স্থান পরিবর্তন ও মানুষের সুষ্ঠ জীবনধারনের সুযোগ-সুবিধা অনেকাংশে কমে যাবে। জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনের বিভিন্ন কারন রয়েছে যেমন- অধিক জনসংখ্যা, গ্রীনহাউস গ্যাস নিঃসরণ, বন উজাড়, নগরায়ন, ক্রমবর্ধমান তাপমাত্রা ইত্যাদি। পরিসংখ্যানে দেখা যায়, ১৯০০ সালের চেয়ে বর্তমানে ১২ গুণ বেশি কার্বন-ডাই-অক্সাইড (CO2) নিঃসরণ হচ্ছে যা তাপমাত্রা বৃদ্ধিকরছে। বৈশ্বিক জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনে শহরাঞ্চলের তাপমাত্রা গ্রামাঞ্চলের তুলনায় অধিক বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে যা শহরে তাপ দ্বীপ (Urban Heat Island) সৃষ্টি করছে। ফলে, পরিবেশের ক্ষতি হয়ে মানুষের মারাত্মক রোগব্যাধি ও অকাল মৃত্যু হচ্ছে। অন্যদিকে, সকলেরই জানা যে, গাছপালা পরিবেশ উন্নয়নে ব্যাপক অবদান রাখে। গাছ পরিবেশের তাপমাত্রা বৃদ্ধিকারক CO2 গ্রহন করে এবং প্রাণিকুলের জন্য অক্সিজেন (O2) নিঃসরণ করে সহায়ক পরিবেশ সৃষ্টি করে।গাছ লাগানো বা বাগানকরণ এমন একটি উপায় যা শুধু পরিবেশ উন্নয়নের নিয়ামকই নয়; অধিকন্তু খাবার, আশ্রয়, ঔষধ ইত্যাদি সরবরাহ করে থাকে। আমরা গ্রামাঞ্চলে সাধারণত বিভিন্ন স্থানে বাগান করে থাকি যেমন, বাড়ির আঙিনায়, রাস্তার পাশে, মাঠে ও অন্যান্য জায়গায়। কিন্তু, শহর এলাকায় এই ধরনের বাগান করার পর্যাপ্ত জায়গা না থাকায় ছাদে বাগান করে এর ক্ষতি পুষিয়ে নেয়া সম্ভব। বহির্বিশ্বের মানুষ অনেক আগে থেকেই ছাদে বাগান করে আসছে। বর্তমানে বাংলাদেশে বিশেষ করে ঢাকা শহরে অপরিকল্পিতভাবে অল্প সংখ্যকছাদ বাগান করা হলেও তা ব্যাপকতা লাভ করেনি। ছাদে বাগান করে শহরে গাছপালা প্রবধর্নের মাধ্যমে জীবের জন্য নিরাপদ পরিবেশ বজায় রাখা সম্ভব। ছাদের বাগান বাতাসের গুণাগুণ উন্নয়ন করে, কারণ, গাছপালা হচ্ছে পরিবেশের বিষাক্ত উপাদানের প্রাকৃতিক ছাঁকনি (Filter)। গবেষণায় দেখা গেছে,বায়ুর তাপমাত্রা বৃদ্ধিকারক উপাদান যেমন পার্টিকুলেট মেটার (Particulate matter) গাছের পাতায়, কান্ডে ও শাখায় লেগে থাকে যা পরবর্তীতে সেচ ও বৃষ্টির পানির মাধ্যমে মাটিতে চলে যায়, যার ফলে বায়ুর তাপমাত্রা হ্রাস পায়।এ ছাড়া গাছপালা গ্রীষ্মকালে তাপশোষণ ও শীতকালে তাপবর্জন করে শহরের তাপমাত্রা নিয়ন্ত্রন করে। ছাদে বাগান বৃষ্টির পানি ধরে রাখা, শহুরেকৃষির সম্প্রসারন তথা ফুল, ফল ও শাক-সবজির চাহিদা পূরন, আয়ের উৎস ও কর্মসংস্থান সৃষ্টিসহ শহরের সৌন্দর্যবৃদ্ধি করে। এটি সামাজিক সম্পর্ক, শিক্ষা, গবেষণা এবং খাদ্য উৎপাদনের মাধ্যমে শহুরে কৃষির একটি মডেল হতে পারে।
