Kinh Pháp Cú là một tập hợp những câu dạy ngắn gọn nhưng đầy ý nghĩa của đức Phật Thích Ca trong ba trăm trường hợp giáo hóa khác nhau. Những câu này do chính đức Phật khi còn tại thế nói ra trong suốt 45 năm thuyết pháp của Ngài.“Kinh Pháp Cú” Dhammapada là một trong 15 quyển kinh thuộc Tiểu Bộ Kinh trong Kinh Tạng Pali. Ðây là một quyển kinh Phật giáo rất phổ thông và đã được dịch ra nhiều thứ tiếng quan trọng trên thế giới. Nhiều tác giả coi bộ kinh này như là Thánh Thư của đạo Phật.
“Pháp” có nghĩa là đạo lý, chân lý, giáo lý. “Cú” là lời nói, câu kệ. “Pháp Cú” là những câu nói về chánh pháp, những lời dạy của đức Phật nên “Kinh Pháp Cú” còn được gọi là “Kinh Lời Vàng” hoặc “Lời Phật Dạy“.

Các câu này về sau được các vị đại đệ tử của đức Phật sắp xếp thành 423 bài “kệ”, chia ra làm 26 “phẩm” và tụng đọc trong Ðại Hội Kết Tập Kinh Ðiển lần đầu tiên sau khi đức Phật nhập diệt.
Kinh Pháp Cú tóm thâu tinh hoa giáo lý của đức Phật. Ðọc những bài kệ trong kinh này người đọc cảm thấy như chính mình được trực tiếp nghe lời Phật dạy từ hơn 2500 năm trước vọng lại. Mỗi bài kệ có thể xem là chứa đựng một cách súc tích và trung thành nhất những lời dạy, những giáo lý căn bản nguyên thủy của đức Phật.
