《墨子》是战国百家中墨家的经典。提倡兼爱、非攻、尚贤、尚同、天志、明鬼、非命、非乐、节葬、节用，涉及哲学、逻辑学、军事学、工程学、力学、几何学、光学，先秦的科学技术成就大都依赖《墨子》以传。现存《墨子》一书，由墨子自著和弟子记述墨子言论两部分组成，宋朝多散佚。至清代编《四库全书》时，仅存五十三篇。文章由小及大、连类比譬、逐层推理，典型如《非攻》。语言质朴无华，造句遣词口语化。墨子一般认为是墨子的弟子及再传弟子关于墨子言行的记录。
在先秦诸子百家中，儒、杨、墨三家号称"显学"，墨子在当时的声望与孔子差不多。由于墨子倡导尚贤、尚同、兼爱、非攻、节用、节葬等主张。
《汉书·艺文志》著录"《墨子》七十一篇"，班固注曰墨子："名翟，为宋大夫，在孔子后。"《隋书·经籍志》著录"《墨子》十五卷，目一卷，宋大夫墨翟撰"。《旧唐书·经籍志》、《新唐书·艺文志》、《宋史·艺文志》都著录"《墨子》十五卷，墨翟撰"。当前通行本《墨子》只有53篇，佚失了18篇，其中8篇只有篇目而无原文。关于《墨子》的佚失情况，一种说法是从汉代开始的，另一种说法是南宋时佚失10篇，其余8篇是南宋以后佚失的。批评儒家的礼乐和天命观念．揭示出“命者，暴王所作、穷人所述，非仁人之言也”，肯定了“强力从事”的命题。但同时主张“明鬼”、“天志”，反映了墨家思想的内在矛盾。汉代以后，墨学几成绝学，直到清代，才重新引起人们的重视。
