Ukhuwah yang biasa diartikan sebagai “persaudaraan”, terambil dari akar kata yang pada mulanya berarti “memperhatikan”. Makna asal ini memberi kesan bahwa persaudaraan mengharuskan adanya perhatian semua pihak yang merasa bersaudara.Masyarakat Muslim mengenal istilah Ukhuwah Islamiyah. Istilah ini perlu didudukan maknanya, agar bahasan kita tentang ukhuwah tidak mengalami kerancauan. Untuk itu, terlebih dahulu perlu dilakukan tinjauan kebahasaan untuk menetapkan kedudukan kata Islamiyah dalam istilah diatas. Selama ini ada kesan bahwa istilah teresebut bermakna “persaudaraan yang dijalin oleh sesama muslim”, atau dengan kata lain , kata “islamiyah” dujadikan sebagai pelaku ukhuwah itu.
Pemahaman ini kurang tepat. Kata Islamiyah yang dirangkaikan dengan kata ukhuwah lebih tepat dipahami sebagai adjektiva, sehingga ukhuwah islamiyah berarti “persaudaraan yang bersifat islami atau yang diajarkan oleh Islam”. Paling tidak ada dua alasan untuk mendukung pendapat ini. Pertama, Al-Qur’an dan Hadits memperkenalkan bermacam-macam persaudaraan. Kedua, karena alasan kebahasaan. Di dalam bahasa arab, kata sifat selalu harus disesuaikan dengan kata yang disifatinya. Jika yang disifati berbentuk indefinitif maupun feminin, maka kata sifatnya pun harus demikian. Ini terlihat secara jelas pada saat kita berkata “ukhuwah Islamiyah dan Al-Ukhuwah Al-Islamiyah”.
Kata ukhuwah berakar dari kata kerja akha, misalnya dalam kalimat “akha fulanun shalihan”, (Fulan menjadikan Shalih sebagai saudara). Makna ukhuwah menurut Imam Hasan Al Banna: Ukhuwah Islamiyah adalah keterikatan hati dan jiwa satu sama lain dengan ikatan aqidah.
